The problem
Can an AI-powered bot capture a specific person's conversational style — memory, humor and timing — while staying honest that it is a bot and never using information it hasn't been permitted to use?
The solution
UV Bot runs in Discord and replies when someone mentions it or replies to it. Each reply is generated with the OpenAI API from an editable persona, curated knowledge, sampled examples of its owner's writing and the recent conversation.
Optional behaviors are controlled by the owner and are all off by default: following up in an active conversation, occasionally joining allowlisted channels, starting conversations on a schedule and human-like pacing. A single command pauses all of them.
Key decisions
- Truthful identity Asked directly, it says it is a bot. It is a representation of a person, not an impersonation.
- Memory with permissions Each memory is reviewed by its owner before use and carries separate permissions: whether it may shape a reply, be disclosed, be spoken in first person or be raised unprompted.
- Privacy by default Learning from chat history only happens when the owner starts it, and it respects channel allowlists and blocklists. Credentials and contact details are filtered out, and API requests are sent with response storage turned off.
- Cheap decisions first A lightweight check decides whether to participate before any model is called, so ignored messages cost nothing.
- Safe scheduling Proactive messages have daily caps, cooldowns and claim-based locking, so two processes can never send the same message.
Outcome
UV Bot is deployed and in live testing in a private Discord community. Digital Clone Core continues as an independent design and infrastructure project.
